YOU FEEL IN LOVE

BEING YOUNG AND SINGLE
While in the village where I grew up. I had those crushes on the schoolboy. Mostly, the boys in the town lack education and are limited when it comes to jobs. The available jobs in the village I came from are primarily farmers and other jobs they just used to do, followed by their parents as a livelihood. Some are tending animals such as cows, goats, pigs, and fowl. When it comes to producing, they plant beans, fruit trees, corn, tobacco, and other crops suitable for the climate. In other words, the girls and boys meet one another in a particular area, like a dancing session during fiesta celebrations. They don’t have much ambition because of where they’re born, raise their children, and die; however, as a continuation of the process from generation to generation. They don’t know anything but live and accept things as they are, what is offered to them. In other words, they don’t question acceptance as it is. However, educated people seem to have ambition, so they want more prospects and ambition by going to the city. In those days, in the 1970s, we also know that young women wanted to go overseas. That’s why they wanted to pursue a career in demand in that country. Some want to go by pen-pal and through an introduction agency, hoping they can find whatever their destiny dictates for them. That’s what happened to me!
Because they don’t have higher demands, unlike in the Western countries, they live a Because, they don’t have higher demands, unlike in the Western nations. They live a simple life and raise their families where they are. Their activities and livelihood are also simple, and they live simple lives. Usually, they live in a little hut, not big like a mansion or elaborate houses; the women accept life as it is, and so do the children, but they’re usually contented. Since their homes are tiny, they are closer and more intimate because there are no such things as TV time or other sports activities. They live a simple life, sometimes buying their food in the marketplace in the township and city. Due to the lack of demands, they seemed content. They accepted that life without luxuries was a fulfilling marriage life as long as they could eat three meals a day and be surrounded by their loved ones.
They may have disputes and other factors, such as their husbands being vicious when they drink “tuba” or coconut brew as men’s vices. Another issue is gambling. If their children are sick and have no money to see a doctor or hospital, they are still satisfied because there is no choice. But usually, they survive; they have no option but to accept what life is in store for them. Though I seldom hear about divorce or annulment of their marriage, they usually have trouble, especially women when their husbands are very vicious and violent due to alcoholism and financial difficulties. When the husband has vices with gambling, alcohol, smoking, and other vices, that’s the couple’s problem. Still, as their culture and tradition are strong, I believe their marriage is stronger than ever. The women tend to be loyal and faithful toward one another.
I have to add that there was another shift of moral values when the women were applying for jobs overseas as domestic helpers that were opening in some other countries such as Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Hongkong, and other countries that have more chances to find a job because the men are unemployed and not much works available in the Philippines. That was the time of new changes in marriage life, especially in the 1970s. Some went to having an affair, for they live at a distance. They turned into separation. It’s not being practiced and unacceptable regarding divorce as legal in the Philippines. However, they call it annulment.
